i've been fortunate in my internship experience this summer - i got to intern at 2 organizations that, despite both falling under the vast purview of the singapore public service, are so very different. there were upsides and downsides of both experiences, but in the end i'd say that i've come out more clear-headed and less starry-eyed than i was a mere 3 months before, and for this i am grateful.
people who are already working might not understand the fascination and sense of novelty that accompanies an intern, stepping into a "real" workplace (by real i guess i'm leaning towards future possibilities), but understanding and accommodating come separately and i'm glad that for the most part, i have been accommodated.
i've also learnt that the comment which has sooo often been tossed about but never really weighed down on me before, that the work we end up doing may have got nothing to do with what we learn in school (at least in terms of content) rings so true. unless you remain in academia, which my fellow intern and i agreed is a freshman phase that many of us went through, until the urge soon passed. i still wonder what i'm gonna end up doing, and whether i'll laugh at myself, pat myself on the back, do both, or have time for neither =P
now i've had exposure in 2 places that, though they belong in the sphere of my general interest of public service, do not particularly resonate with me in terms of the work i imagine i can wake up to do day-to-day(-to-day-to-day...) or where i see myself developing or charting a career, i'm starting to be restless for exposure at someplace i can attach more meaning to, and feel for, and think: "it's so amazing that i'm part of this". haha! there's idealism left in me yet.
