1 week of semester at uconn

My week-long experience of taking classes here at UConn have more or less been quite similar to that of taking classes at NUS. The 1st lectures particularly were so strikingly familiar that I was somewhat thrown off balance. Don't know what I expected, but as it turned out I came in to a lecture theatre full of students some chopping seats for their friends, almost all fidgeting, most minding their own business facing up front ready to pay attention. Very familiar.

me, valerie, tiffany, shu-en, eliza; NUS FASS represent!

As the week went by it's gotten slightly but clearly more intense... i'm not exactly sure why but i think it's a combination of some or all of certain factors:
1. i'm taking higher level courses by virtue of my being in the 1st sem of my 3rd year
2. i'm still unfamiliar with how exactly to get some things done (eg. where and how much of notes is normally printed, the difference in assessments and weightage etc.) and thus am handling both taking classes and learning and adjusting to student life here which adds to the things-to-figure-out list
3. classes (inc. "tutorials") kick off right from the outset, w/o that easing in period offered at NUS in the 1st 2-3 weeks of the semester, there's more homework and an emphasis on continuous assessments (no recess or reading week either)
4. homework has begun and i don't have my books yet. and everyone's serious about getting homework done 0.o

A few of the NUS students here went to a Study Abroad info. session at the Asian Americn Cultural Centre to "promote" NUS to UConn students interested in going to NUS for study abroad. We listened to presentations from UConn students who'd been to NUS and find that they seem to really really really enjoy their time there. Well done lah NUS.

Funny board ("Asian Americans: The Truth") of quotes there~

"I'm not in an arranged marriage",
"You have an accent too",
"English IS my first language",
"I'm not a terrorist" and
"I suck at math" (HAHA) are a few notable ones.

On Friday nights, the UConn student union organizes "Late Night at UConn" where they bring in people to set up "stalls" for students to get things done like drip-paint caps, caricatures of themselves (v popular; long queue), funny money (which we did) and the flipbook thing which i think is really cool and get names printed on "license plates" etc. The SU also screens free movies on Fri nights in the SU theatre ($2 on Thu, Sat and Sun nights); we watched Superbad yesterday -.- and Thursday nights are comedy nights where guest comedians are invited to do stand up. Oh YES and open mike karaoke where we get to be amused by karaoke antics of students (some in a good way, others.....)

All in all, "most happening" is quite an appropriate description of SU activities here. And unlike NUSSU events it manages to capture a broader spectrum of the student pop. (Y)

At the 1st comedy night of the sem~

Funny Money~

UConn is pretty much a self-contained sort of campus especially if you don't own a car, but it's surrounded by small towns so we ventured out to a mall in Willimantic (one of the towns) on Friday after our classes. It's a small-ish sort of mall, and quite empty, but (or maybe because of that?) there were some pretty neat shops and discounts available. (Once again!) we ended up spending more-than-proportionate amount of time in certain shops (this time it was JCPenny, Kohl's and looking at boots) that we kinda had to breeze through the others, and in the end only managed to cover 1 level. Actually, i don't even know if there are other levels; we didn't even make it to the escalator! I got a clip from Claire's (buy 1 get 2nd at 50% appears to be the most popular discount type) and a pair of slacks =D =D was torn between a Nike, a Fila and a Tek Gear and i was sooo tempted to splurge on the Nike or pay for the Fila but ended up getting the Tek Gear which is super comfy and looks just as good on me as the other 2, just less branded. Quite proud of myself for resisting temptation and being spendthrift like a good girl.

the beautiful Fila that i for-goed (still love it though love my tek gear too!)

Many indoor and outdoor arenas/stadiums/fields on campus for different sports (soccer, american football, field hockey, volleyball, basketball & more). We went to the UConn men's soccer opening math again NY's St Francis~
